Mitchell has been working in construction for forty years. He is a licensed General Contractor in the state of Florida and a LEED Accredited Professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Prior to starting AGK Contracting, he opened a branch office in Central Florida for Albritton Williams Inc (a General Contractor Construction Company) and was named Vice President / Operations Manager. He spent 14 years in this position servicing the area theme parks and resorts as a general contractor or highly specialized sub-contractor. During this period there were many challenging specialty projects ranging from being the GC of the stage and backdrops for all the props of Cirque du Soleil at Downtown Disney to being involved as a sub-contractor from the ground breaking through completion of Celebration, a community that Disney developed. Mitchell quickly grew to be a trusted advisor to many clients, and as a result, Albritton Williams became a preferred GC at Disney.
However, Mitchell built his knowledge base in construction in Houston, TX by starting out as a general laborer on a construction job site. During this time he learned the basics of construction by self performing layout, forms, framing, roofing, trim and hardware installation. His passion for excellence and craftmanship quickly moved him up to working on high end homes with a Custom Home Builder focusing his craft on fine millworks and custom cabinetry. Mitchell married in 1977 and had two wonderful children (a daughter that is now a license architect and a son who is an engineer). This life change steered Mitchell more into the management side of construction. In 1985, Mitchell became an estimator for McCoy Inc, a custom furniture shop in Houston, TX. For McCoy, Mitchell gained experience in the commercial and retail sectors doing work for oil companies, law firms, financial firms and retail stores. Mitchell was promoted to General Manager of the custom shop which included refinishing and upholstery. In 1988 he was hired as Vice President of Operations for Creative Furnishing Inc which built custom millwork and case furnishings for commercial and retail companies. One of their largest accounts was Pea in the Pod, a maternity retail chain with stores across the United States.
During his time in Houston Mitchell engaged in hands on education through a multitude of opportunities that came as a result of his hard work and dedication. Opportunities such as: working as an apprentice to an artist learning the art of stretching canvas, polishing bronze sculpture and building crates for shipping the works of art, and taking a course at Rice University called “Lost Wax Method of Bronze Casting”.
The non-conventional education along with his construction background proved valuable when a unique opportunity came in early 1991. He was hired to build a complicated mortise and tendon deck at the first Disney Vacation Club. Ultimately, this resulted in him being hired by a large Landscape Site Contractor and he moved his family to Orlando. For HLS, Inc he was in charge of the site amenities and Hardscape projects. By this time Mitchell had built an extensive base of construction, management and artistry knowledge and he was hired by Phillips and Jordan to start up a sub company, SiteScapes, specializing in site amenities. This led to his move to Valley Crest Landscape working as a regional Hardscape manager building the area development of the Town of Celebration and Africa at Animal Kingdom at Disney World. At Valley Crest he used his skills from his casting education to make molds of roots, weathered wood, brick, stone and mud for custom pavements for Disney. His specialty skills leveraged him into a small niche of contractors in the Central Florida area and it resulted in his tenure and success at Albritton Williams as mentioned above.
Mitchell relocated to Grassy Key, FL after spending twenty years building all types of specialty projects at Disney and many of the major resort destinations in Central Florida. AGK Contracting is the next venture in his long construction career. He loves a challenge and building the unusual. AGK Contracting looks forward to crafting dreams that will last you a lifetime.
